Blastocystis sp. infections are common in birds - they differ from other Blastocystis spp in that the nucleus does not have a crescentic band of chromatin but has spots/ blocks of condensed chromatin. Blastocystis occurs in many animals including invertebrates, reptiles, birds and mammals including humans. It is not known if it is a zoonosis; Blastocystis may consist of several different species with distinct host ranges. Currently Blastocystis in humans is referred to as Blastocystis hominis and in other hosts as Blastocystis spp.
